The word comes from the Fur Bulungan Tengon (Bahasa Bulungan), which means a real bamboo. Due to a change dialect of Malay then changed to "Bulungan". A legend that developed in the community tribe Bulungan that of a bamboo that is born a leader named Jauwiru.

And in the history of descent, was born the Bulungan Sultanate. After the death Kuwanyi Jauwiru replace his position as chairman of the Dayak Tribe (Hupan). Then Jauwiru had a son named Paran Anyi.

Paran Anyi has no male offspring, but he had a wife named Lahai Bara who later married a man named Wan Paren who replaced the position of Paran Anyi. From the Lahai Bara marriage and Wan Paren birth to a son named Si Barau and a daughter named Simun Luwan.

At the end of his life, Lahai Bara mandated the two children in order to "Lungun" that the coffin is placed on the downstream side (river Kipah). Lahai Bara pass three kinds of heirlooms, the ani-ani or kerkapan, kedabang kind of headgear, a paddle. Three types of heritage has led to disputes between Si Barau and his brother, Simun Luwan. Simun Luwan finally managed to pick up a paddle and go take along coffin Lahai Bara.

Because of his supernatural powers possessed by Simun Luwan simply by scraping the tip of the paddle on a promontory of the river Payang, the cape was disconnected and drifted downstream to the riverbank Kayan are now located in the village of Long Pelban. In the upstream village Long Pelban Lahai Bara coffin is buried.
