History Toraja
World Tribe ~ tribes inhabit this most northern part of South Sulawesi peninsula. Toraja word given by the natives of Central Sulawesi to refer to ethnic groups living in the interior and the mountains, to mean the people, and wrote ri meaning mountain. Toraja people of old called his group by the area where he lives, that Sa'dan, from the name of a river that flows through their territory. Because it is often also referred to as Sa'dan Toraja. And judging from their language is also called the Toraja Tae.

At the present time Toraja people lived in the area included in the area of Tana Toraja. Some of them remain in the region of Mamuju. There also are residing in the Luwu and Enrekang. Livelihood Toraja
The people's livelihood is basically paddy cultivation and little in the field. Besides rice they grow corn, vegetables, cassava, sweet potato, coffee, cloves, coconut and passion fruit. In the past the Toraja region famous as a producer of fine coffee. Livestock, especially buffaloes and pigs needed to complete their religious ceremonies. For daily food they keep the fish in the pond, raising chickens and ducks.
Community Toraja
Toraja people kinship system dominated by kinship groups called marapuan or parapuan oriented to the ancestral founder tongkonan, the communal house is the center of social life as well as kinship and religious members. Marapuan group consists of relatives of 3-5 generations. Because of the Toraja embraced bilateral kinship patterns, then that person can be a member of several pieces tongkonan. In ancient times a person looking for a soul mate in a group tend to marapuan or tongkonan (endogamy). Indigenous settled after marriage in the usual virilokal, and now tend to neolocal.
Toraja people actually divided into three tribal regions, namely Kama'dikan, Pakamberan and Kapuangan. Kapuangan tribal region has a system of social stratification fairly sharply as the effect of Bugis and Makassar kingdom first. Kapuangan called ma'dika nobility, commoners called tomakaka class, and class slave called KAUNAN. Of course, this last group is now no longer exists.
Religion and Belief Toraja
Before converting to Islam or Christianity, the Toraja people embrace a belief system called Aluk To Dolo, ie the old belief that centered on three aspects. The first worship of the Creator People called Puang Matua, the worship of the deata-deata (gods preserver), and the third worship ancestral spirits called Tomebali Puang are considered to give a blessing and protective to their offspring. Old belief system that primarily manifest in their concept of death and the ceremonies surrounding the death.
